Broadband vs. Dial Up

wireless-3In the early 90s the Internet was born and brought to the consumer driven world, however the only available connection back then was a dial up modem which was amazing at the time but know it is a whole different story.

Dial up Internet was slow and cumbersome, but we could search millions of sites and meet many different people, a new world for us all. However you would most likely find yourself in the middle of talking to someone online or sending a long email and someone in your household wants to use the phone so you have to go offline. Nightmare!

And if you wanted to download something over 10 megabytes you could go for a sleep and come back and it would only be half done. Dyer!

Jump through time to the new age millennium and see how fast the Internet has become. And it’s all because of broadband and its significant force in the online world. At first wireless Internet cost a bomb and no one was jumping on the bandwagon despite tearing their hair out with dial up.

But now the prices have dropped and people are able to gain faster and more convenient access to the World Wide Web. Gone are the days when people would say, “Broadband isn’t available in my area” as the accessibility is spreading rapidly.

Some people moved onto the world of satellite Internet which although is great, if it rains really hard or any debris gets inside your satellite or something comes in between your signal then say goodbye to your Internet connection until it is fixed again.

Most phone companies offer some form of DSL. Most cable companies will offer some kind of package plan that includes a cable Internet connection. And most of the time cable is the best way to go. It is fast, reliable and it doesn’t matter how far away you are from the main office as to what speed you will have. DSL – on the other hand – is a very good alternative if you simply cannot get cable. It can be slightly slower than cable but its speed is dependent on how close to the phone you can get. Downloading big files is no longer a nightmare!

With every technology there are always drawback and even with wireless broadband there are some. This drawback comes in the form of an ‘always connection.’ This means that your computer or laptop is always connected to the Internet allowing hackers access to your computer and all its files. The best thing to do is to install an anti-virus and firewall protection and there are many free ones out there.
